1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a particularly complex estate matter

I handled a £3.2M estate involving international assets across 4 jurisdictions for a deceased businessman. The situation required coordinating with overseas lawyers, managing inheritance tax liabilities of £850,000, and resolving disputes between 7 beneficiaries. I established weekly progress meetings, created a detailed timeline for each jurisdiction's requirements, and negotiated a settlement that reduced the tax burden by £180,000 through legitimate planning structures. The estate was distributed within 14 months despite the complexity, and the family praised my communication throughout the process.
2Question

Describe how you've mentored junior fee earners in your previous roles

I mentored 3 newly qualified solicitors over 18 months, implementing a structured development programme. I created weekly case review sessions where we analysed their draft documents, established monthly client observation opportunities, and set quarterly technical knowledge assessments. One trainee struggled with inheritance tax calculations, so I developed practical worksheets and arranged specialist training. Within 8 months, their billing efficiency improved by 40% and client feedback scores increased from 3.2 to 4.6 out of 5. All three successfully completed their probationary periods and continue to excel in private client work.
