1Question

Tell me about a time when you helped a struggling reader make significant progress

A Year 2 pupil in my class was reading at Reception level and becoming increasingly frustrated during whole-class literacy sessions. I assessed his Phonics knowledge and identified gaps in Phase 3 sounds. I designed a targeted 4-week intervention programme using multi-sensory activities and daily 15-minute sessions. I tracked his progress weekly using running records and celebrated small wins with sticker charts. By the end of the programme, he had progressed from Phase 2 to Phase 4 sounds and was reading simple sentences independently. His confidence improved dramatically, and he began volunteering to read aloud in class.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your teaching approach for a pupil with additional needs

I was supporting a Year 1 pupil with ADHD during Phonics sessions who struggled to focus for more than 3 minutes. Traditional seated activities weren't working, so I adapted my approach to include movement-based learning. I created Phonics hopscotch games, used magnetic letters on a whiteboard at standing height, and incorporated 2-minute movement breaks between activities. I also provided fidget tools and visual timers to help him self-regulate. This approach increased his engagement from 20% to 85% of session time, and his Phonics assessment scores improved by 12 points over 6 weeks.
