STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child overcome a developmental challenge

A 3-year-old in my care was struggling with speech development and becoming frustrated during group activities. I observed his communication patterns for 2 weeks and identified that he responded better to visual cues. I created picture cards for common words and worked with him for 15 minutes daily using these tools. I also collaborated with his parents to use the same approach at home. After 6 weeks, his vocabulary increased by 40 new words and his confidence in group activities improved significantly, with him volunteering to participate in story time sessions.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work collaboratively with other staff members

Our nursery was preparing for an Ofsted inspection with just 3 weeks' notice. I worked with 3 colleagues to review all our EYFS documentation and identified gaps in our outdoor learning records. I took responsibility for coordinating our response, creating a shared tracking spreadsheet and assigning each team member specific areas to update. We met daily for 15-minute progress reviews and supported each other with challenging cases. Our collaborative approach resulted in all documentation being completed 1 week early, and we received an Outstanding rating for our teamwork and record-keeping during the inspection.
