STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a family through a challenging situation

A single mother was struggling with her 3-year-old's behaviour and felt isolated from other parents. I arranged weekly one-to-one sessions to discuss positive behaviour strategies and gradually introduced her to our stay-and-play group. Over 8 weeks, I provided consistent emotional support and practical parenting techniques. The child's behaviour improved significantly, and the mother became a regular attendee who now helps welcome new families. This experience taught me the importance of building trust before implementing interventions.
2Question

Describe how you've worked with other professionals like health visitors

I worked with a health visitor to support a 2-year-old with suspected speech delays. We held joint assessment sessions to observe the child's communication patterns and developed a coordinated support plan. I implemented daily speech and language activities while the health visitor provided family guidance and referral pathways. After 12 weeks, the child's vocabulary increased from 10 to 45 words. This collaboration highlighted how different professional perspectives create more effective outcomes for children and families.
