1Question

Tell me about a time you had to influence a business decision through financial analysis

When our operations team proposed expanding warehouse capacity by 40%, I conducted detailed financial modelling showing the £180,000 investment would only break even after 18 months due to seasonal demand patterns. I presented three alternative scenarios including a phased approach and outsourcing peak periods. By demonstrating that the phased expansion would achieve 85% of the capacity increase at 60% of the cost, I influenced leadership to adopt this approach, ultimately saving £72,000 while meeting operational needs.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to explain complex financial information to non-finance colleagues

Our sales director struggled to understand why gross margin had declined despite revenue growth of 12%. I created a visual dashboard breaking down the margin impact by product line, showing that while volume increased, we'd shifted toward lower-margin products. I used simple analogies comparing it to selling more economy cars versus luxury models. This helped him recognise the need to rebalance the product mix, leading to a 6% margin recovery over the following quarter through targeted pricing and promotional strategies.
