1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to persuade colleagues to help solve a complex engineering problem

When our main control system experienced intermittent faults affecting 3 generation units, the operations team initially resisted my recommendation for a complete system diagnostic during peak demand period. I organised a meeting with the 8-person operations team and presented data showing the faults had increased by 40% over 6 weeks, with potential for complete system failure. I explained how a planned 12-hour diagnostic would prevent an estimated 72-hour emergency shutdown. By demonstrating the financial impact of £180,000 in lost revenue versus £15,000 in planned maintenance costs, I secured their agreement. The diagnostic identified faulty relay modules, and we completed repairs with only 8 hours of downtime, preventing the larger system failure.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage competing priorities in maintenance planning

During Q4, I faced simultaneous demands for annual statutory inspections on 6 electrical systems while managing an urgent turbine control upgrade project worth £450,000. With only 3 technicians available and a 2-week window before regulatory deadline, I had to prioritise effectively. I analysed risk levels and created a matrix showing that 4 systems could be inspected concurrently with the upgrade work, while 2 required separate attention. I negotiated with the project contractor to stagger their work phases, allowing my team to complete statutory inspections first. This approach delivered 100% compliance on schedule while keeping the upgrade project only 3 days behind the original timeline, saving £25,000 in potential penalty costs.
