STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to adapt to changing delivery schedules or routes

During a particularly busy Christmas period, our usual trunk route to Birmingham was blocked due to motorway closures. I quickly consulted my route planning app and identified an alternative route via A-roads that would add 45 minutes but ensure on-time delivery. I contacted dispatch to confirm the change and adjusted my break schedule accordingly. Despite the disruption, I completed all 3 scheduled deliveries within the planned timeframe and maintained the required chill chain temperatures throughout. This flexibility helped our depot achieve 98% on-time performance that week despite the challenging conditions.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a safety concern and how you handled it

During my pre-trip inspection, I noticed the refrigerated trailer's temperature gauge was fluctuating between 2°C and 6°C instead of maintaining the required steady 3°C. Rather than risk compromising the chill chain for £15000 worth of fresh produce, I immediately reported the issue to transport control and completed a detailed defect report. I helped transfer the load to a backup trailer, which delayed departure by 90 minutes but ensured food safety compliance. My proactive approach prevented potential product spoilage and maintained our depot's excellent food safety record with zero temperature breaches that quarter.
