1Question

Describe a time when you had to mentor a junior colleague through a complex tax issue

When a junior colleague struggled with a complex group relief claim worth £450,000, I implemented a structured mentoring approach. I broke down the technical requirements into manageable steps, provided real-time guidance during client meetings, and created a detailed checklist for future reference. Over three weeks, I conducted daily 30-minute review sessions and encouraged questions at every stage. The result was a successful claim submission that met all HMRC requirements, and the junior colleague gained confidence to handle similar cases independently, reducing my review time by 40% on subsequent group relief work.
2Question

Tell me about a situation where you identified a tax planning opportunity for a client

While reviewing a manufacturing client's corporation tax computation, I noticed they had significant R&D expenditure that wasn't being claimed for enhanced relief. The client had spent £380,000 on qualifying activities but was unaware of the 230% deduction available. I prepared a detailed analysis showing the potential tax saving of £87,000 and worked with their finance team to implement proper R&D tracking systems. I also coordinated with our advisory team to submit retrospective claims for the previous two years. This delivered total tax savings of £245,000 and established an ongoing R&D advisory relationship worth £15,000 annually.
