STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell us about a time you delivered exceptional customer service when someone was unhappy—what did you do?

A customer ordered a cappuccino but found the milk too hot and the foam inconsistent. Rather than dismissing their concern, I apologised, asked what they preferred, and remade the drink with cooler milk and finer microfoam. I also offered them a complimentary pastry to make up for the inconvenience. They left smiling and came back the next week, specifically requesting me. This taught me that taking ownership of mistakes and going the extra mile builds loyalty—I now proactively check drink temperature with customers before serving.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work as part of a team under pressure. How did you contribute?

During a Saturday morning rush at my previous café, we had three team members out sick and a coachload of 40 customers arrived unexpectedly. I coordinated with the two remaining staff: I focused on espresso drinks, my colleague handled teas and cold drinks, and our manager took till. I communicated clearly about order priorities, helped wipe down the espresso machine between drinks to prevent backlog, and kept morale up with a calm demeanor. We served everyone within 18 minutes. Afterwards, the manager praised our teamwork and I realised that clear communication and staying organised under pressure is what keeps a team functioning.
