STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer during a delivery

Situation: I arrived at a busy café during their lunch rush to deliver 12 cases of beverages, but the manager claimed they hadn't ordered them and refused delivery. Task: I needed to resolve this without disrupting their service or returning with undelivered stock. Action: I calmly showed the delivery note and called our dispatch to verify the order while suggesting we store the cases in their back area temporarily. I offered to return after lunch rush to sort any paperwork issues. Result: The manager appreciated my flexibility, accepted the delivery, and later confirmed it was their weekend order placed by another staff member. This maintained our relationship and ensured smooth future deliveries.
2Question

How do you prioritise multiple deliveries when running behind schedule?

Situation: During a particularly busy Friday, road closures caused me to fall 90 minutes behind on my 8-delivery route. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries while minimising impact on customer operations. Action: I called ahead to all remaining customers to explain the delay and asked about their preferred delivery windows. I rearranged the route to hit the most time-critical customers first, including a restaurant needing ingredients for evening service. Result: I completed all deliveries by 6pm, with customers appreciating the communication. The restaurant manager specifically thanked me for prioritising their delivery, strengthening our business relationship.
