1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to support colleagues outside your immediate responsibilities

During our year-end audit, our payroll accountant was unexpectedly off sick for 2 weeks. Despite my focus being on management reporting, I stepped in to support the audit team with payroll reconciliations for 180 employees across 3 entities. I worked evenings to maintain my own deliverables while learning the payroll system quickly. I identified £3,200 in unreconciled differences and created detailed working papers. The audit completed on schedule, and my manager praised my flexibility. This experience taught me the value of cross-training and supporting team members during critical periods.
2Question

Describe a situation where your attention to detail prevented a significant error

While reviewing intercompany transactions for our quarterly consolidation, I noticed a £45,000 management fee that appeared in both UK and German entities but with different exchange rates applied. The original booking used month-end rates while the elimination used average rates, creating a £1,800 consolidation difference. I traced this back to inconsistent policy application across entities. I corrected the current quarter and implemented a standardised rate protocol, preventing similar errors. This saved potential audit adjustments and strengthened our consolidation controls going forward.
