STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you provided excellent customer service in a challenging situation

A customer had ordered groceries for an elderly relative but the delivery address was incorrect, leading to a 20-minute delay. Rather than simply returning the items, I called the customer to clarify the correct address and discovered it was only 2 streets away. I explained the situation calmly, delivered to the correct address, and helped the elderly gentleman carry his shopping inside as he had mobility issues. The customer later called to thank me, saying their relative had been worried about missing essential medication that was in the delivery. This experience reinforced how going the extra mile in customer service can make a real difference to people's lives.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt to changing priorities or schedules

During a particularly busy Christmas week, our delivery schedule was disrupted when 2 drivers called in sick, leaving 80 additional deliveries to be covered by the remaining team. I volunteered to extend my shift from 8 to 12 hours and take on an unfamiliar route across town. I quickly studied the new delivery area, reorganised my van loading sequence to match the route efficiency, and managed to complete all 35 assigned deliveries plus 8 extras from the sick colleagues. By staying flexible and working systematically, we maintained our customer promise of same-day delivery despite the staffing challenge.
