1Question

Tell me about a time you had to coach a junior staff member through a challenging audit

During a complex retail client audit worth £45m turnover, one of our graduate trainees was struggling with inventory valuation procedures and falling behind schedule. I recognised they needed hands-on support rather than just written guidance. I spent 2 hours on-site demonstrating the sampling methodology and walking through the computerised audit system step-by-step. I then paired them with our most experienced senior for the remaining inventory work. This coaching approach helped them complete their sections within the original 3-week deadline, and their confidence improved significantly for subsequent audits.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage multiple audit deadlines simultaneously

Last year-end season, I was managing 8 client audits simultaneously, including 3 partnerships with March year-ends requiring Companies House filing by December. I created a detailed project timeline mapping all key milestones and allocated specific team members to each client based on their expertise. I held weekly progress meetings and identified potential bottlenecks early. When one client requested additional management accounts work, I negotiated a 2-week extension and reallocated resources from a smaller audit. All 8 audits were completed on time, generating £180k in fees whilst maintaining quality standards.
